“Product aesthetics is already a very tiny and highly mobile niche job market coveted by many but occupied by very few. Paradoxically, it seems the target of most designers today, whether students or experienced. This is the definition of career suicide when opportunities for a new “design” profession abound and, if anything, are only increasing. They are, however, relatively immaterial and do not need flashy renderings or self-conscious, fame-seeking personalities, but rigorous intellectual training, strong analytical skills and a high degree of personal culture in many subjects. In other words, precisely the training most ID schools still do not provide in the 21st century. That could form the core of a new field and keep very busy at least those graduate designers willing to forfeit the tired media-fed “misunderstood artist” lifestyle for a more stable livelihood with less flash but measurable impact on the lives of many, not just a fortunate few”

For those of you interested in what our design team did in Aspen to create a program to improve rural healthcare delivery in Minnesota, check out the link.

I think its got a ton of potential and I’m looking forward to it. One of my contributions was quickly sketching out a potential website for this community platform. I do all of my storyboarding in Keynote. It’s more like Illustrator Lite. I lifted the photo of the woman from David Lynch’s Interview Project…an inspiration for the web component in this project for Mayo Clinic.

Throughout this internship in Hong Kong one of the most valuable skills I’m learning is how to pay more attention to details. Perfect example…we were having trouble with some surfaces wanting to be asymetrical, but when you try to cradle a phone into that surface it looks wonky. I noticed Olymus does a really nice job integrating the lens into the body of this camera, almost as if it was growing out of it. Nicely donnnnne <3

The rest of the camera….hmmm, not so much.. I’m thinking if I were the designer, I would have concieved a camera made from Zaha Hadid when she pretend married Fukasawa and then had tiny camera children.

On board the MRO is HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which has been photographing the planet for several years now at resolutions as fine as mere inches per pixel. Collected here is a group of images from HiRISE over the past few years, in either false color or grayscale, showing intricate details of landscapes both familiar and alien, from the surface of our neighboring planet, Mars. I’m sitting in the Denver airport ready to catch a plane to Aspen for the Aspen Design Summit (a partnership between the AIGA, Winterhouse, and The Rockefeller Foundation). It’s not a conference. There are 70 really amazing thinkers (like Tim Brown, the CEO of IDEO and Robert Fabricant of Frog Design) split up to work on one of five projects to tackle rural poverty, rural healthcare, education in developing countries, healthy aging, and sustainable food. I’m working on Mayo Clinic’s Rural Health program:

Mayo Clinic Rural Health Program
The Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation will lead an initiative around rural health care delivery systems and how design can help to impove these systems to broaden their impact, efficiency, and reach. The initiative envisions what a massive, local rural community healthcare intervention might look like.

The fundamental goal of each studio is to develop a course that can be executed within 24 months to advance the challenges posed, including program definition and description; a business plan and funding requirements, and an implementation plan.

It’s gonna be awesome.

I will be there in spirit my friend. Lol. Let me know how it goes, this sounds absolutely amazing.

Design Revolution Road Show

Emily Pilloton, founder of Project H Design and author of the new Design Revolution will be headed on a two month tour to showcase some of the products that can be found in her new, and must I say, amazing book.

I’ve gotten the privledge to purchase it in Hong Kong and it is a must read. It’s definitely inspirational as well as an amazing reference book for future use. Hopefully you will be able to see her if she passes through a nearby town, unfortunately she will not be in Savannah, but the nearest place is Auburn…maybe McCabe can take everyone lol. Otherwise, click on the picture and keep up with her blog!
